Chlorine is very effective in killing most microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. However, chlorine is much less effective in killing a certain class of microorganisms called protozoa. They have an outer shell that allows them to survive in harsh conditions. The most common protozoa that cause recreational water illnesses are Cryptosporidium (“crypto”) and Giardia. In the most severe cases, they can result in death. These organisms are why someone who has diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal cramps should not enter a pool or spa. Unfortunately, even after symptoms abate, protozoas can still be released into the water. UV light treatment is very effective against protozoa and bacteria.
